“The Last Performance” is an animated short documentary that tells the story of queer activist Zak Kostopoulos. Using his writings as a vehicle and visualizing his narration in front of a camera(Youtube vlogging style), we take a journey through the comedic and dramatic stories of his daily life, set against the backdrop of Athens in the 2010s, tracingthe social landscape in which Zak lived. Zak was constantly moving throughthe center of the capital and his stories are set there, in this city that fascinates him, but also attacks him. As a culmination of all these stories, we watch the last story of Zak’s life, at noon on September 21, 2018, the story of his murder, which took place in front of dozens of spectators. At the same time, his alter-ego drag persona, the diva “ZackieOh!”, is preparing to give her “last performance” in a full theater; in front of dozens of people.

Animation technique is a traditional 2d animation emphasizing on textures and lines.
For Zak’s moves we use rotoscoping, in which we trace over real filmed footage to create life-like motions of the character.
Because of the live-action source material, the audience does not loose touch with the real-life references. The use of rotoscoping aims for a documentary feeling on the film.
